turning 25
There are moments I think about who I would’ve been if a few things had gone differently. If I had stayed somewhere longer. If I had loved people less. If I had been less afraid of leaving. But the thought never lasts very long. I can’t imagine myself without all of it now. Even the parts that made me quieter for a while eventually taught me how to listen.
I’ve realized that becoming yourself isn’t one dramatic event. It’s hundreds of tiny decisions that don’t seem important until years later. The coffee you always make the same way. The songs you replay every autumn. The route you take home because you like the trees on that street better. The people you keep calling, even when life gets busy. You build a life almost accidentally, and one day you wake up inside it.
I think taking care of yourself is less about fixing who you are and more about paying attention. Opening the windows in the morning. Buying flowers from the grocery store because they cost less than lunch. Sitting outside for ten minutes instead of scrolling. Learning which conversations leave you feeling lighter and which ones make you carry their weight home.
Maybe that’s what growing up has been for me—not becoming someone entirely new, but becoming someone I recognize more often. Someone who knows that joy isn’t something you stumble into once. It’s something you keep making room for.
I still change my mind all the time. I still wonder if I’m doing enough. But I trust myself more than I used to, and that feels like a quiet kind of success. The version of me that existed five years ago would probably be surprised by how ordinary my dreams have become. I don’t want a perfect life anymore. I just want one that feels like mine
